HIFU Therapy for the Face

Some consider high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU), a relatively new cosmetic treatment for skin tightening, to be a noninvasive and painless alternative to face lifts. It uses ultrasound energy to stimulate collagen production, resulting in firmer skin.

The most well-known application of HIFU is the treatment of wrinkles In 2008, the first aesthetic use of HIFU was reported, according to a reputable source.

In 2009, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved HIFU for brow lifts. The FDA also approved the device in 2014 for the treatment of lines and wrinkles on the upper chest and neckline (décolletage).

Multiple small clinical trials have demonstrated that HIFU is safe and effective for facial lifting and wrinkle reduction. A few months after treatment, patients were able to see results without the risks associated with surgery.

While the procedure is also used for overall facial rejuvenation, lifting, tightening, and body contouring, these applications are considered “off-label,” meaning the FDA has not yet approved HIFU for these uses.

To determine who is most suitable for this type of procedure, additional evidence will be needed. So far, HIFU has been discovered to be a promising treatment that could replace facelifts, particularly in younger patients who wish to avoid the risks and recovery time of surgery.

HIFU will not be as effective for those with severe cases of sagging skin.

HIFU utilizes focused ultrasound energy to target the skin layers just beneath the surface. The ultrasonic energy rapidly causes the tissue to heat up.

Once the targeted area’s cells reach a certain temperature, they suffer cellular damage. This may seem counterintuitive, but the damage actually stimulates the cells to produce more collagen, the skin-supporting protein.

The increase in collagen results in skin that is more taut, firm, and wrinkle-free. Since the high-frequency ultrasound beams are focused on a specific tissue site beneath the skin’s surface, there is no damage to the skin’s outer layers or adjacent issue.

HIFU may not be suitable for all patients. In general, the procedure is most effective for individuals over 30 with mild to moderate skin laxity.

People with photodamaged or excessively lax skin may require multiple treatments before seeing results.

Those with extensive photoaging, severe skin laxity, or extremely sagging neck skin are not good candidates and may require surgery.

Infections and open skin lesions at the treatment site, severe or cystic acne, and metallic implants in the treatment area are contraindications for HIFU.

According to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS), HIFU and other nonsurgical alternatives to facelifts have gained tremendous popularity in recent years. Between 2012 and 2017, the total number of procedures performed increased by 64,8 percent.

Yes, hifu treatment benefits is the next topic you’ll read about! HIFU has numerous aesthetic benefits, such as:

  • Reducing wrinkles
  • Tightening neck skin that has sagged (sometimes called turkey neck)
  • Cheeks, eyebrows, and eyelids are raised.
  • Enhancing definition of the jawline
  • Contraction of the décolleté
  • Suppleness of the skin

The study results are encouraging. After 12 weeks, HIFU significantly improved the skin elasticity of the cheeks, lower abdomen, and thighs, according to a 2017 study involving 32 Malaysians.

Sixty-six percent of 93 individuals treated with HIFU perceived an improvement in the appearance of their face and neck after 90 days, according to a larger study.

If performed by a qualified and trained professional, HIFU is considered to be extremely safe.

The best aspect of this treatment is that you can immediately resume your regular activities after leaving the provider’s office. There may be some mild redness or swelling, but it should subside quickly. A light tingling sensation may persist for a few weeks in the treated area.

Infrequently, you may experience transient numbness or bruising, but hifu facelift side effects typically disappear within a few days.

Mild, transient procedural and postprocedural discomfort, erythema, bruising, and edema are the only adverse effects. If you’re wondering is hifu dangerous, HIFU is a safe and effective fat reduction technique. There’s no Hifu side effects stomach can feel.
