DIVE IN TO DERMAL FILLERS!
How do dermal fillers work?
Dermal fillers are a type of non-surgical cosmetic treatment. They help add volume to your face, smooth out wrinkles, and fill in lines. A healthcare professional injects these fillers directly under your skin.
Many people choose fillers like Juvederm to enhance their facial features or look younger. The procedure takes less than 30 minutes, and recovery time is minimal. Depending on the filler type and area treated, you may see results right away, which can last for months or even years.
What types of dermal fillers are there?
There are several types of dermal fillers available. Doctors can use fat from your own body instead of commercial fillers made from synthetic materials. This process, called “autologous fat grafting,” involves taking fat from one part of your body and injecting it into your face.
Some common types of dermal fillers include:
- Hyaluronic Acid (HA): This natural substance provides volume and hydration. As you age, your body produces less HA. HA fillers, like Restylane®, usually last six months to a year.
- Calcium Hydroxylapatite (CaHA): Made from a material found in bones, these fillers can last about a year and are often used for deeper wrinkles. An example is Radiesse®.
- Poly-L-lactic Acid (PLLA): This helps your body create collagen and is used for deep facial lines. Results can last up to two years. Sculptra® is a type of PLLA filler.
- Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA): These fillers contain tiny balls that stay under the skin, providing volume and firmness. Bellafill® is one example of a PMMA filler.
Your healthcare provider will discuss the different options and help you choose the best one for your needs.
Setting Realistic Goals
It’s important to talk about your goals and what to expect from the injections. While some people worry about fillers, when done correctly, they can create a natural, youthful look by restoring lost volume and enhancing facial features. An experienced injector knows facial anatomy and how to achieve balanced results.
Using the wrong filler in the wrong place can lead to problems. Some patients think that more volume is always better, leading to what’s called “filler fatigue.” You can find examples of this online.
LONG TERM EFFECTS
Over time, using dermal fillers may weaken the muscles in your face, head, and neck. This can lead to difficulties with swallowing, voice changes, and even double vision.
